Welcome to FAN OF THE MONTH!

This month's Fan of the Month participates avidly in the life on the message board.  He's fairly new to the board but definitely not new to L.A. Guns.  So, without further ado, we present to you: soundfx. Congrats, Andy!

Screen Name?
Soundfx :)

And what is your real name?
Andy :)

Where are you from?
Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - it's about a half hour west of Detroit :)

Please tell us a little about yourself (Job, hobbies, etc.):
I work at a hospital in IT.  Doing stuff like fixing computer and server problems, maintenance on SQL databases, stuff like that.  But it's what I do for a living, it's not who I am (he said, adjusting his pocket protector).  Who I am is someone who: loves rock'n'roll music of all kinds; loves hanging out with family & friends; doesn't mind making an ass of himself singing karaoke; loves playing or watching sports; loves driving when no other cars are in front of him; has two cats (Jake & Elwood); likes to drink anything - beer, wine or liquor; is a total wimp when he's too hungover; thinks females are awesome and perfect; currently (and usually) has no food in his apartment except one bottle of Tabasco sauce; had every kind of white boy long hair possible when he was a kid from the trusty old mullet to the wild Cliff Burton look; thinks Jon Stewart should run for President; runs every single day - rain or shine (or snow) - and is hoping to be up to snuff enough to run the Detroit Marathon this year; thinks pizza is the food of the gods; is a lover not a fighter; has given up on ever being a true grown up; hates it when the waiter or waitress asks how you're doing right after you took a bite; wishes George Lucas would have stopped at three "Star Wars" movies in 1983; doesn't own a comb or a hair brush or a hair dryer - which sometimes can cause problems for guests; thinks his new PDA is the greatest thing since sliced bread; thinks his DVR (aka TIVO) is almost as cool as his new PDA; loves his iPod more than his PDA or his DVR; doesn't care if he looks geeky - cuz after all - he is kind of geeky...  I guess that's all I can think of off the top of my head :)

How/when and why did you get into L.A. Guns?
I got into Guns'N'Roses the summer just after high school (class of '87 anyone?) and was totally caught up in how raw they were and how much better they were than so much of the corporate rock that was being pushed down our throats.  From reading about them I knew about this little band called LA Guns, who were in the early G'N'R mix a little bit, how the guitar player from LA Guns, whose last name was Guns, was supposedly the 'Guns' part of the Guns'N'Roses name.  You always hear different things about that, especially these days.  But that's how LA Guns got onto my radar, even though I hadn't heard them yet and they hadn't released an LP yet.  At that point, I didn't know what I was going to do with myself, and I had way too much fun in high school for any college to let me in its doors.  So for me - it was join the army for the $ for college.  About six months or so after reading about this band called LA Guns I was in the army and done with basic training, finishing up advanced training.  It was summer of '88 when training was done and I was heading back home for two weeks before going to Germany.  By then LA Guns' debut had been released and somebody played me "No Mercy", which kicked massive amounts of ass.  For me that album just decimated almost every other hard rock band of the day - except for maybe G'N'R and the thrash bands - nobody else rocked that hard.  What a riff!  What a voice!  It was punky, it was metallic, it was perfect, and I was hooked.  I got into LA Guns just in time to head off to Deutschland for three and a half years :)

What is your favourite song/album?
My fave song from the boys is "Rip & Tear"/fave album from them is "Cocked & Loaded" :)

Now share your favourite L.A. Guns story/memory, please:
I've never met any of the guys from any era of the band, so I don't have any stories like that unfortunately.  I guess most of my LA Guns memories are really just personal memories from what I was doing when certain albums came out or came into my life.  The first three though, those are plastered with memories of being in the army.  An army buddy of mine had a Porsche while we were stationed in Germany.  This was an old, beat up Porsche.  Not in great shape.  But it was a Porsche.  I got to drive that thing down the autobahn with absolutely no idea how fast I was going, because the needle was buried on the speedometer, all this while "Electric Gypsy" blared loudly from the speakers.  I always remember driving that thing down the autobahn every time I hear "Electric Gypsy".  I also remember when we were out 'playing war' with our unit and on a slow day we took this tank, an armored personnel carrier called an M113, and we were just ripping it up through the woods.  Just having fun.  Totally unprofessional, but just excellent fun.  You could hook your Discman or whatever right up to the system and hear the music in your helmet.  I remember a lot of "Cocked & Loaded" from that trip.  "Ballad Of Jayne" makes me think of this beautiful little Romanian refugee I was seeing in Warzburg, she dug that tune and played it all the time.  So anyway, those first three official LPs always make me think of '88 through '92, being in the army, living in Germany :)

What other bands do you like?
I like all kinds of music.  He's probably not popular with a lot of folks on the board, but I love Springsteen's music & live shows.  To my way of thinking - that guy is all killer, no filler.  I'm not a huge fan of country or rap or light pop, but some of it's good.  The hits, stuff like that can be all right sometimes.  But I'm a rocker.  But I'm into all kinds of rock'n'roll though, not just the heavier stuff.  Rock'n'roll is sliced and diced into all these different categories, but pretty much if it's got guitar driving it, and it doesn't sound too processed or too poppy or too fake to my ears - then I usually can get into it.  If I had to pick just my top ten fave bands or something like that, it would probably be different on any given day I'm asked.  But if I was going to be stranded on a desert island and could only have one album - it would be "Born To Run" because it's just the perfect rock record to me.  Don't worry - if I was able to take two records it would be "Born To Run" along with "Cocked & Loaded" :)

What is/are your favourite book(s)?
"Everybody Poops" is good.  Other than that classic I like all kinds of books.  Stephen King is my fave though.  That guy is just nuts.  I like Chuck Klosterman's stuff a lot, too.  He writes about pop culture stuff, sports, music, and he's just very entertaining overall.  As for rock books - "The Dirt" is an awesome read.  Pure fun, with absolutely no socially redeeming qualities at all.  I never thought a rock book could top "Hammer Of The Gods" for sheer insanity - until I read "The Dirt" that is.  Also - Phil needs to get Microsoft Word fired up and get to work on his autobiography, don't you think? :)

And which is/are your favourite movie(s)?
I love all kinds of movies, too.  But my favorites are probably crime movies with a twist.  "Pulp Fiction" is - to me - the single greatest movie ever created.  All of Tarantino's other stuff is a blast also.  So are "Goodfellas" & "Godfather I & II" - those are almost perfect.  "Scarface" is a great way to spend a couple of hours.  "No Country For Old Men" is probably my favorite movie since "Pulp Fiction" :)

Any famous last words?
All I can say is if you're reading this you must think LA Guns is a pretty killer band.  If you're a member of the forum already, big shout out to you!  You rock!  If you're not a member of the forum, well - what are you waiting for?  We all love LA Guns in this forum, so you should pop in "Tales From The Strip" and make yourself an account and come on in.  We don't bite.  Well, maybe sometimes we bite, but just a little bit. :)
